History of JPSC
The history of JPSC began with the merger of 18 districts of Bihar to form the state of Jharkhand with its own State Civil Service Commission under the provision of Article 315, a part of the Constitution of India. It came into force on 15 November 2000.
JPSC Syllabus
The JPSC syllabus is divided into two parts:
Preliminary Examination: It is a written examination consisting of two papers:
- Paper 1: General Studies
- Paper 2: Jharkhand-Specific General Studies
Main Examination: It is a written examination consisting of five papers:
- Paper 1: General Hindi & General English
- Paper 2: Language & Literature
- Paper 3: Social Science
- Paper 4: Indian Constitution & Polity
- Paper 5: Indian Economy
- Paper 6: General Science
The preliminary examination is an objective-type exam and the main examination is a descriptive-type examination. The preliminary examination is a qualifying examination, and only candidates who score above the cut-off marks in both papers will be eligible to appear for the main examination.

JPSC Syllabus for Mains Exam
There are no optional papers in the JPSC Mains Syllabus. Also, Paper-I marks will not be counted in the final merit list.
The details of the JPSC syllabus for the main exam are given below:
- Paper-I: General Hindi & General English (100 Marks)
- Paper-II: Language and Literature (150 Marks)
- Paper–III: Social Science, History and Geography (200 Marks)
- Paper–IV: Indian Constitution, Politics, Public Administration and Good Governance (200 Marks)
- Paper–V: Indian Economy, Globalization and Sustainable Development (200 marks)
- Paper–VI: General Science, Environment and Technological Development (200 marks)
Duties and Responsibilities
The Commission is permitted to function under the Constitution of India and the Union Public Service Commission which amends it to the State Public Service Commission.

- Organization of competitive examinations in the state.
- Conducting interviews, screening tests and written examinations.
- To advise the State Government on the suitability of officers for appointment to promotion.
- Transfer of civil service officers from one service to another.
- To lead disciplinary cases under his jurisdiction.
