Diwali is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. This festival is celebrated every year with special joy and celebration not only in India but also in Indian communities around the world. 

What is Diwali?

The word “Diwali” means “series of lamps”. This word is made up of “Deep” and “Aavali” which are words of the Sanskrit language. Diwali is also called Deepavali. This festival brings happiness to every home and Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshiped in every home on this day. Although Diwali is a five-day festival in which each day has a different significance, generally 2 days are most special – Chhoti Diwali and Diwali. Generally, the festival of Diwali falls between mid-October to mid-November. Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya, the fifteenth day of Kartik month. Diwali in 2023 is on Sunday, 12th November.

Importance of Diwali Celebration

Diwali is a major Hindu festival that marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana. It signifies the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. On this day people decorate their houses with lamps and rangoli, wear new clothes and exchange sweets and gifts. Goddess Lakshmi is especially worshiped for prosperity and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is also worshipped. Diwali is not only a festival of lights but also a festival of mutual love. It brings families together and spreads happiness.

When is the date of the Diwali celebration in 2023?

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Diwali will be celebrated every year on Amavasya, the 15th day of the month of Kartik. This year, the festival of Diwali will be celebrated across the country on 12 November. Worship of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi also has special significance on this day. Amavasya Tithi on 12th November will start at 2:45 PM and end at 2:57 PM on 13th November.

Why do we celebrate Diwali?

Diwali is celebrated to symbolize the victory of good over evil. On this day, Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana after 14 years of exile. The citizens of Ayodhya decorated their homes and the entire city with lamps. Since then Diwali started being celebrated by lighting lamps and bursting crackers. Another reason to celebrate Diwali is that it is considered the beginning of the New Year in many parts of India. It is said that in Satyayuga, Goddess Lakshmi appeared from the churning of the ocean and on this day she married Lord Vishnu. And people welcomed him by lighting lamps. Since then we worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on Diwali. With this, we wish that Goddess Lakshmi arrives in our house and our intelligence also increases.

In recent years, there has been increased awareness of the environmental impact of Diwali celebrations. People are now more aware of using eco-friendly ways to celebrate festivals.
