Gramodaya se Bharat Uday Abhiyan is a central government program launched in the year 2016 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to bring development and improvement in the quality of life in Panchayati Raj Institutions. This Abhiyan was launched on 14 April 2016 in memory of social reformer Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who worked to develop the Panchayati Raj and equal rights for the underprivileged class. It is also known as Gram Swashasan Abhiyan. India is a nation whose about 70% of the population lives in villages.

Details of Gramodaya se Bharat Uday Abhiyan

  • This 11-day campaign started on 14 April 2016 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and ended on 24 April 2016 on Panchayati Raj Day.
  • Panchayati Raj Institutions and State Governments work together in this campaign to develop villages.
  • This program aims to strengthen unity and harmony between the state government and the central government.
  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar This campaign was announced in a public meeting held in Mahu village on the occasion of Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary and was named Samajik Samrasata Program.
  • This campaign aims to remember Ambedkar’s ideology and provide equality, respect and high social priority to the villages.

Need for Gramodaya Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan

  • India is known as a village-dominated nation, as about 70% of the population lives in villages.
  • It is necessary to implement government schemes to promote the development and social status of villages.
  • The Constitution of India has a provision of Directive Principles of State Policy for the development of villages.
  • Gandhiji had said that villages are the backbone of the nation, if villages are destroyed then the nation will also be destroyed.

Objectives of Gramodaya Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan

  • Creation of social harmony in villages and making people aware.
  • To improve Panchayati Raj institutions and provide facilities for sanitation, drinking water and electricity.
  • To promote rural development.
  • To improve the condition of the lower/weaker sections of the society.
  • To increase awareness towards Gram Sabhas and agricultural schemes.
  • Empowering the role of women in village and rural development.

Features of Gramodaya Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan

  • This scheme will be coordinated at various levels with the support of the Centre, State and Panchayati Raj.
  • Gram Sabhas will be organized from April 14-16 under the Samajik Sadbhavna program led by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • Gram Kisan Sabhas will also be organized under the Gram Sabha.

  • This will improve agricultural productivity and farming methods.
  • Panchayati Raj Institutions will be established for the development of villages.
  • The standard of living in rural areas will be improved.

Implementation of Gramodaya Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan

  • This campaign will be run jointly by the Union Ministries of Rural Development, Social Justice, Agriculture, Labour and Information & Broadcasting and the State Governments.
  • ‘Samajik Samrasta Program’ will be organized in all Gram Panchayats from April 14 to April 16, 2016. Through this programme, information will be given about government schemes to promote social justice.
  • ‘Gram Kisan Sabha’ will be organised from 17 April to 20 April 2016. In these meetings, farmers will be informed about schemes related to horticulture and their suggestions will be sought for improving farming.
  • Gram Sabha meetings will be organised across the country from 21 to 24 April 2016. Prabhat Pheri, cultural programmes and sports programmes will also be organised in villages during these days.
