A few years ago, most families in rural areas of India used wood, cow dung cakes and other traditional fuels for cooking. The smoke emanating from the use of these fuels not only caused air pollution but also harmed the health of women and children. To tackle this problem and promote clean energy in rural areas, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in 2016. The scheme is a social welfare scheme launched by the Government of India which aims to provide clean and healthy cooking options.
