The Uttar Pradesh government launched the Samuhik Vivah Yojana in October 2017 to promote communal and social harmony. Under this initiative, marriages are organised following the diverse customs observed in different communities and religions. Another objective of the scheme is to reduce unnecessary extravagance and grandeur in marriage ceremonies.
The scheme is available to families from all communities whose annual income does not exceed Rs 2,00,000 from all sources. Under this programme, Rs 35,000 is allocated to the bride’s bank account to assist in setting up the home. Additionally, essential wedding materials such as apparel, jewellery and utensils are provided, for the purchase of which an amount of Rs 10,000 is set aside. In addition, Rs 6,000 is set aside for miscellaneous marriage expenses. As a result, each marriage receives a total financial assistance of Rs 51,000.
Under this scheme, facilities are provided to organize Samuhik Vivah for at least 10 couples at various administrative levels including urban bodies (Nagar Panchayat, Nagar Palika Samiti, Municipal Corporation), Kshetra Panchayat and Zila Panchayat.
