India Assumes Chair of Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre

Context:

India has taken over as the Chair of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC).

Key Highlights 

  • Rajendra Singh, Member & Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has taken over as the Chair of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) from China for the year 2024-25 in Bangkok, Thailand. 
  • India is at the forefront of global and regional Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) efforts, including founding the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).
  • Recently, India also chaired the 5th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting of the ADPC held in Bangkok. 

About the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC)

  • The ADPC is an autonomous international organization dedicated to disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in Asia and the Pacific. 
  • It was founded by India and eight neighbouring countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
  • ADPC works collaboratively with governments, UN agencies, and other stakeholders to enhance disaster preparedness and response capabilities.

Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) 

  • It is a global partnership aimed at building resilience into infrastructure systems to ensure sustainable development. It was launched under the leadership of India at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)

  • NDMA, headed by the Prime Minister, is the apex body for Disaster Management in India. 
  • Setting up of NDMA and the creation of an enabling environment for institutional mechanisms at the State and District levels is mandated by the Disaster Management Act, 2005. 
  • NDMA is mandated to lay down the policies, plans and guidelines for Disaster Management.
  • India envisions the development of an ethos of Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness and Response.
