Context: Recently, Mauritius bestowed its highest civilian award to the Prime Minister of India.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes the First Indian to receive Mauritius’ highest civilian honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.

• The announcement was made by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, recognising Modi’s contributions to strengthening India-Mauritius relations.

• This marks the 21st international honor for Prime Minister Modi.

Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK)

• It was founded in 1992 to decorate people who have made a contribution to social progress in the nations of the Indian Ocean. 

• Since Mauritius became a Republic in 1992, only five foreign dignitaries have received that title, including Nelson Mandela, who received it in 1998.
