PM condoles demise of classical dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy

Context:

Recently, the Prime Minister of India expressed his condolences following the passing of renowned Indian classical dancer Dr. Yamini Krishnamurthy.

About Yamini Krishnamurthy (1940-2024):

  • She introduced Bharatanatyam to northern India, taking Delhi by storm with her performances.
  • she also excelled in Kuchipudi and Odissi, bringing a unique versatility to her stage presence.
  • She was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards.
  • She was also honored with the title of Asthana Narthaki (“Resident Dancer”) by the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam temple. 
  • In 1990, she opened the Yamini School of Dance in Delhi.
  • In 1995, she published her autobiography, "A Passion for Dance," co-written with Renuka Khandekar.
  • she often followed legends like Pandit Lachhu Maharaj and Sitara Devi

Indian classical dance:

  • The earliest treatise on dance is Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra (also known as the fifth Veda), the sourcebook of the art of drama, dance, and music. It is generally accepted that the date of the work is between the 2nd century B.C.E.- 2nd-century C.E.
  • The Sangeet Natak Academy recognizes eight classical dance forms. They are Bharatnatyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kathak, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Odissi and Sattriya. 
  • Additionally, the Ministry of Culture includes Chhau as a semi-classical dance form.
