'Retired Sportsperson Empowerment Training' (RESET) Programme

Context:

Recently, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports launched the 'Retired Sportsperson Empowerment Training' (RESET) programme on the occasion of National Sports Day.

About the RESET programme

  • The RESET Programme is aimed at empowering our retired sportspersons who have played for the country.

Objectives:

  • To support these athletes in their career development by equipping them with new knowledge and skills to enhance their employability.
  • To connect experienced retired athletes with younger, aspiring sportspeople.
  • By leveraging the vast experience of former athletes, the programme will help mentor the next generation, contributing to the growth of sports in India and supporting national development.
  • Eligibility: Athletes aged between 20 to 50, who have won international medals, participated in international events, or earned national or state-level distinctions recognised by the National Sports Federations, Indian Olympics Association, or the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

National Sports Day

  • It is celebrated annually on August 29th to honor Major Dhyan Chand, a legendary hockey player.
  • Major Dhyan Chand, known as "The Wizard of Hockey”.
  • In 2012, the Indian government declared this date as National Sports Day to recognize his contributions to Indian sports.
  • It aims to inspire individuals of all ages to participate in physical activities, cultivate and promote a sports culture, and honor the achievements of athletes.

  • The pilot phase of the programme will be implemented by the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE).
  • Applications for the programme will be accepted through a dedicated portal.
  • It will be offered at two levels based on educational qualifications: Class 12th and above, and Class 11th and below.
  • It will be offered in a hybrid format, combining self-paced learning via an online portal with on-ground training and internships.

Key Government Sports Initiatives

  • Khelo India Scheme: It supports infrastructure, training, and financial assistance, and includes the Khelo India Youth Games, sports academies, grassroots programs, and facility development.
  • Fit India Movement: It promotes healthier lifestyles through yoga, running, and sports. It focuses on making fitness accessible, encouraging indigenous sports, and spreading fitness awareness across various communities.
  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS): It aims to enhance India's Olympic performance and help athletes succeed on the global stage.
  • Special Area Games (SAG) Scheme: It targets talent from tribal, rural, and coastal areas with advantageous physical traits. It offers specialized training, modern facilities, and educational support to develop athletes into national and international champions.
